St. Isidore the Farmer Church: Another Milestone for Spiritual Outreach in the Rural Areas of the Diocese of Tagbilaran
The Saint Isidore the Farmer Church (SIFC) had started as a humble place of worship through the initiatives of small groups of local traders and peddlers in Barangay San Isidro (formerly, Gaboc), Tagbilaran City. It was established on May 15,1893. The purpose of which was for them to have a place where they can converge and pray after the days’ activities. Originally, it was made out of local light materials mainly bamboos and nipa shingles and it was done through bayanihan efforts among the peddlers and the local traders.
For several years it was under the jurisdiction of the St. Joseph Cathedral Parish and later on a part of the pastoral jurisdiction Sta. Cruz Parish of Barangay Dao, Tagbilaran City. The seed sown that prepared it to be a parish was laboriously initiated by Msgr. Margarito Gonzaga, a well-known church builder. From its humble beginning for more than a century, today the church is now raised into a new Parish, effective May 15, 2009 by Bishop Leonardo Medroso. As mandated by the Diocese of Tagbilaran, the parish includes its services to the adjacent barangay of Cabawan. The annual fiesta of the parish is celebrated every May 15 in honor of the feast of its parish patron, San Isidro Labrador. Its first parish priest is Rev. Fr. Jose Sinforiano J. Monton.
Rev. Fr. Andres Ayco, formerly the parish priest of St. Joseph Cathedral, will assume the duty to be the in-coming parish priest effective June 2, 2009.
As a new parish, the St. Isidore the Farmer Church, together with the active participation of the parishioners through the Parish Pastoral Council was able to define its vision, mission and goal, to wit:
Vision - A community of Christ’s disciples rich in Faith, nourished by the Eucharist, inspired by the Word of God and strengthened by Prayer;
Mission - Led by the Spirit of God guided by St. Isidore the Farmer, we commit ourselves to the following:
• Faithfulness to Christ, to the Gospel and to the teachings of the Church;
• Perseverance and growth in prayer life;
• Witnessing to the cause of justice for all;
• Service to all, especially the poor;
• Being sources of hope for those “who live in darkness and in the shadow of death”.
Goal: To build communities that is human and totally Christian.
Presently, the entire church complex has evolved into a contemporary structure to include the church, the convent and the church plaza. The sanctuary inside the church has been improved aesthetically to fit in for liturgical celebrations. The newly renovated church can now accommodate around three hundred worshippers with some modern amenities such as state of the art sound system and a centralized air conditioned facilities.
